Good dentistry isn’t only what happens in the chair at 37 Etna St, Gosford, NSW. On 12–13 September, our Principal Dentist, Dr Ryan Chou, gave up his weekend to volunteer at the Tzu Chi Dental Free Clinic, held at the Dundas Community Centre in Sydney. Organised by the Tzu Chi Foundation, the clinic brought together dentists, dental students and community volunteers to provide free dental care to local residents who don’t otherwise have easy access to it. Here’s a short video from the two days.
A community effort, two days running
Working from temporary treatment booths set up especially for the event, 29 dentists and 28 dental students, supported by volunteers from both Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine backgrounds, treated 129 people from the local community over the weekend. It’s the kind of clinic Tzu Chi, an international charitable organisation known for its community health work, runs regularly to reach people who’d otherwise go without dental care.
Why Dr Chou keeps showing up
A full weekend on your feet in a temporary clinic takes a toll, something Dr Chou, like most dentists, is well used to. What stays with him isn’t the physical side of it, though; it’s watching the relief on a patient’s face when a problem they’ve been carrying for months is finally taken care of. It’s a reminder, he says, of why he became a dentist in the first place.
A different setting, the same values
Digital Dental Implant Institute (DDII) is based in Gosford, and Tzu Chi’s clinic was run out of Sydney — two different communities, but the same instinct behind both: using dental skills to genuinely help people. It’s the same approach our team brings to every patient who walks through our doors on the Central Coast, whether they’re in for a routine check-up or a full-arch consultation.
