What they are

A series of clear, removable aligners — not brackets and wires

Clear aligners are thin, custom-made trays worn over the teeth. Each one is designed to move the teeth a small amount, and the set is changed in sequence — typically around every one to two weeks, depending on the plan your dentist prescribes.

Because they are removable, they come out for eating, drinking and cleaning. That also means they only work while they are in: most treatment plans require aligners to be worn 20–22 hours a day, and results depend heavily on that.

Some cases also need small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to certain teeth to help specific movements. Your dentist will tell you if yours does, and why, before treatment begins.

How aligner treatment runs at DDII

Timeframes vary from person to person. The number of aligners you need depends on the movements required — some plans use around ten, others thirty-six or more.

01

Assessment

An examination of your teeth, gums and bite. Gum health and untreated decay are addressed first — aligners are not appropriate over an unhealthy foundation.

02

Digital records

Photographs, X-rays where clinically indicated, and an intraoral scan instead of putty impressions.

03

3D plan and quote

Your dentist prescribes the tooth movements and shows you the digital plan. It is a simulation of the planned outcome, not a guarantee. You receive a written quote with item numbers.

04

Aligners and reviews

Your aligners are fabricated by the laboratory, then worn in sequence with periodic reviews. Retainers are needed afterwards to hold the result — teeth move throughout life.

Aligners or conventional braces

Both are legitimate options — the differences, plainly

Clear aligners are not suitable for every case. Complex bite corrections and some rotations are still better managed with fixed appliances, or by referral to an orthodontist. Your dentist will say so if that applies to you.

Risks and considerations

What we tell every patient before they start

All dental treatment carries risk, and orthodontic treatment is no exception. These are discussed with you in full — along with the option of doing nothing — before you consent to anything.

Results depend on wear
Aligners only move teeth while they are worn. Inconsistent wear extends treatment or compromises the outcome.
Discomfort is common
Tightness, tenderness and a temporary lisp for a few days after changing aligners are usual, particularly early on.
Possible complications
Root resorption, gum irritation, decalcification and relapse are recognised risks of orthodontic treatment.
Retention is lifelong
Retainers are part of the treatment, not an optional extra. Without them, teeth tend to drift back.

What it costs

Aligner fees depend on how many aligners your case needs and how long treatment runs, so we quote after the assessment rather than before it.

You receive an itemised written quote with dental item numbers, so you can check your health fund rebate before deciding. Payment plan options can be discussed at your appointment.

Already had braces years ago?

Mild relapse after earlier orthodontic treatment is one of the more common reasons adults ask about aligners. Bring any old retainers with you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does clear aligner treatment take?−
It depends on the movements required. Some limited cases are completed in a few months; comprehensive cases commonly run twelve months or longer. Your dentist gives you an estimated timeframe with your plan, and it can change if aligners are not worn as prescribed.
Will anyone notice I am wearing them?+
Aligners are clear and generally discreet, though they are not invisible — attachments bonded to some teeth can be visible at close range. How noticeable they are varies from person to person.
Do clear aligners hurt?+
Most patients describe pressure or tenderness for a day or two after changing to a new aligner. Tell your dentist if discomfort is persistent or sharp rather than settling.
Can I eat and drink with them in?+
No. Aligners are removed for eating and for anything other than water, then the teeth are cleaned before the aligners go back in. Wearing them while drinking sugary or hot liquids risks decay and distortion.
What happens if aligners are not right for me?+
Then we say so. Some bites and rotations are better treated with fixed braces, and complex cases may be referred to an orthodontist. You are under no obligation to proceed after an assessment.
