What a comprehensive exam is

More than a look and a polish

A comprehensive examination is a systematic check of every tooth, the gums and the supporting bone, your bite, and the soft tissues of the mouth, lips and tongue. Small X-rays are taken where clinically indicated, because decay between teeth and bone loss around them are not visible to the eye.

The clean that follows removes plaque and hardened calculus that brushing cannot, above and just below the gum line, followed by a polish and fluoride application.

You then get a plain-language summary of what we found. If something needs treating, you are told what it is, what the options are — including monitoring it rather than treating it now — and what each would cost, in writing.

Your first visit

What happens, in order

Allow around 45 to 60 minutes. If you have heavy calculus or active gum disease, a single clean may not be enough — we will explain why and what further care would involve rather than rushing it.

01

History and concerns

Your medical and dental history, any medications, and what prompted the visit. Tell us about anxiety — it changes how we pace the appointment.

02

Examination and X-rays

Teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues are checked, with small X-rays where clinically indicated. Radiographs are only taken when there is a clinical reason.

03

Clean, polish, fluoride

Plaque and calculus are removed, the teeth are polished and fluoride applied. Some sensitivity during or after a clean is normal, particularly if it has been a while.

04

Findings and next steps

A written summary, home-care advice specific to what we saw, and a recall interval based on your risk — not a fixed six months for everyone.

What the fee covers

Included, and what is quoted separately

We would rather you knew the boundaries of the $229 before you arrive. Nothing outside it is carried out without your agreement and a written quote.

Things worth knowing

What we tell every new patient

Even a routine appointment has things you should expect. These are explained at the visit, and you can decline any part of it.

Sensitivity after a clean
Temporary sensitivity and some gum tenderness or bleeding are common, especially if it has been years since your last clean.
One clean is not always enough
Established gum disease needs a staged course of care over more than one visit. We will tell you if that is the case rather than doing a partial job.
X-rays only when indicated
Radiographs are taken when there is a clinical reason, not routinely by default. You can ask why any particular image is needed.
A clean is not whitening
Removing stain can make teeth look brighter, but a clean does not change the natural colour of your teeth.
FEES

Health funds and payment

We can process your health fund claim on the spot where your fund allows it, so you only pay any gap. Rebates differ between funds and levels of cover, so check yours before the appointment if the amount matters to you.

Children may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Ask our reception team and we will check your eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is the $229 a discount or an ongoing fee?−
It is the standard fee for a new patient comprehensive examination and clean at this practice, not a limited offer. It covers the items listed above; anything further is quoted separately in writing.
Will I get a rebate from my health fund?+
Most funds with extras cover contribute to examinations, cleans and X-rays, but the amount depends on your fund, your level of cover and how much of your annual limit you have used. We can process the claim on the spot where your fund allows it.
How often should I come back?+
It depends on your risk of decay and gum disease, not a fixed rule. Some patients are best seen every three to four months, others annually. Your dentist recommends an interval and explains the reasoning.
Does the clean hurt?+
Most patients find it uncomfortable at worst rather than painful. If your gums are inflamed or there is a lot of calculus, it can be tender, and we can use local anaesthetic. Tell us and we will adjust.
What if you find something that needs treatment?+
You are told what it is, shown the X-ray or photograph where relevant, and given the options — including monitoring rather than treating immediately. Nothing is booked or carried out on the day without your consent and a written quote.
