PORCELAIN VENEERS · GOSFORD, CENTRAL COAST

Porcelain veneers, designed digitally and discussed before anything is prepared

Veneers are thin, custom-made ceramic shells bonded to the front of the teeth to change their colour, shape or alignment. They are elective, and in most cases irreversible — so at DDII the conversation starts with whether they are the right answer for what is bothering you.

What a veneer is

A thin ceramic shell, bonded to the front of a tooth

Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a dental laboratory from a material chosen because it handles light in a way that resembles natural enamel. They are bonded to the front surface of the tooth to change its colour, shape, size or apparent position.

Porcelain resists surface staining better than composite resin does, and a wider range of shades and levels of translucency is available — which matters when veneers sit beside natural teeth that have to match.

Most veneers require some enamel to be reduced so the ceramic sits flush. That step cannot be undone: once prepared, a tooth will always need a veneer or crown on it. Some conservative cases need little or no preparation — your dentist will tell you which applies to your teeth.

The process

From first consultation to bonded veneers

Usually two to three appointments across a few weeks, depending on how many teeth are involved and what the laboratory schedule allows.

01

Consultation and examination

Teeth, gums and bite are assessed, and we talk through what you want changed. Decay, gum disease and heavy grinding are addressed before any cosmetic work.

02

Digital design

An intraoral scan replaces putty impressions. Shape and shade are planned digitally and reviewed with you, along with a written quote.

03

Preparation

Where enamel reduction is needed it is done conservatively, and temporary veneers are placed while the laboratory fabricates the final ceramics.

04

Try-in and bonding

Fit, shade and bite are checked before the veneers are bonded. Small adjustments are made, then a review appointment follows.

Alternatives worth considering

Veneers are one option — sometimes not the right one

If discolouration alone is the concern, whitening may achieve what you want without touching the enamel. If teeth are crooked, moving them can be more conservative than covering them. We will raise these alternatives whether or not you ask.

Option
May suit when
Tooth structure removed
Professional whitening
Discolouration is the main concern and the teeth are otherwise well shaped
None
Composite bonding
Small chips, minor gaps or a single edge to repair
Little to none
Clear aligners or braces
Teeth are crooked or spaced rather than damaged or discoloured
None
Porcelain veneers
Shape, colour and alignment concerns across several front teeth, where other options fall short
Usually some enamel reduction
Crowns
The tooth is heavily filled, cracked or root-treated and needs full coverage
More than a veneer
Risks and considerations

What we tell every patient before they start

All dental treatment carries risk, and veneers are elective treatment. These points are discussed with you in full — along with the option of doing nothing — before you consent.

Usually irreversible
Enamel removed to make room for the ceramic does not grow back. The tooth will need a veneer or crown for life.
Sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity to hot and cold after preparation is common; in some cases it persists or the tooth needs further treatment.
They can chip or debond
Porcelain is strong but not unbreakable. Grinding, nail biting or opening things with your teeth shortens their life; a night guard may be recommended.
Not permanent
Veneers have a finite lifespan and will eventually need replacement. Longevity varies with your bite, oral hygiene and habits.
Colour is fixed once made
Porcelain does not respond to whitening. If you want a lighter shade overall, whitening the natural teeth first is usually the sensible order.
Gums must be healthy
Active gum disease or untreated decay has to be managed before cosmetic work, or the result will not last.

What it costs

Veneer fees are quoted per tooth and depend on the number of teeth, the laboratory work involved and any preparatory treatment needed first.

You receive an itemised written quote with dental item numbers before treatment is booked, so you can check your health fund rebate. Veneers for purely cosmetic reasons are often not covered — worth confirming with your fund.

Frequently asked questions

How long do porcelain veneers last?−
Longevity varies considerably. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups many veneers give years of service, but bite forces, grinding and habits such as nail biting all shorten that. They are a restoration, not a permanent fix, and will need replacing at some point.
Does it hurt?+
Preparation is normally carried out under local anaesthetic. Some tenderness and sensitivity to temperature afterwards is common and usually settles; tell your dentist if it does not.
Can I have just one veneer?+
Yes, and single veneers are often done to match a chipped or discoloured tooth. Matching one veneer to neighbouring natural teeth is technically demanding, which is why shade and translucency are planned carefully.
Will they look obviously fake?+
Shade, shape and translucency are selected with you and matched to your other teeth and complexion. The aim is a result that suits your face; how closely that can be achieved depends on your starting point and is discussed at the consultation.
Do I still need to see a dentist regularly?+
Yes. The tooth underneath a veneer can still decay and the gums around it can still be affected by disease. Routine examinations and cleaning remain important.
