Why teeth discolour

Not all discolouration responds to whitening

Surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco generally responds well. So does much of the gradual yellowing that comes with age, as enamel thins and the dentine beneath shows through.

Other causes behave differently. Discolouration from certain medications, trauma to a single tooth, or fluorosis may respond only partially, unevenly, or not at all — and a dark single tooth sometimes needs a different treatment altogether.

That is why an examination comes first. Whitening gel does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, bridges or fillings, so if you have restorations on your front teeth, the sequence matters and needs planning.

Two options

In the chair, at home, or a combination

Both use professional-strength gel prescribed after an examination. Which suits you depends on your teeth, your sensitivity and your timeframe — and for some patients we combine the two, with a take-home kit used to maintain the result.

In-chair whitening

A single appointment of roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Your gums and lips are isolated and protected, whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated, then rinsed and reapplied in cycles while the result is monitored.

•Done in one visit, under supervision
•Shade continues to settle over the following days
•Short-term sensitivity is more common than with take-home

Custom take-home kit

We take a digital scan and have trays made to fit your teeth precisely. You fill them with the pre-measured gel and wear them for the time your dentist prescribes, over a period of days to a couple of weeks.

•Gradual change you control, at home
•Custom trays keep gel off the gums
•Trays can be reused later for top-ups with fresh gel
What happens

Four steps, in this order

Whitening over untreated decay or inflamed gums is uncomfortable and unwise, so the examination and clean come first — not as an upsell, but because the result depends on them.

01

Examination

Your dentist checks for decay, cracks, exposed roots, gum health and existing restorations, and identifies the likely cause of the discolouration.

02

A clean first

Plaque and surface deposits are removed. Some of what patients want whitened turns out to be staining that a scale and clean lifts.

03

Shade record and plan

Your starting shade is recorded so change can be assessed objectively, and you are given a realistic idea of what is achievable — plus a written fee.

04

Treatment and review

In-chair, at home, or both — followed by aftercare advice on managing sensitivity and keeping the result for as long as possible.

Risks and considerations

What we tell every patient before they start

Whitening is elective treatment and carries risks. These are discussed with you — along with the option of doing nothing — before you consent.

Sensitivity is common
Short-term sensitivity to cold and mild gum irritation happen frequently. They usually settle within a few days; tell us if they do not.
Results vary
How much lighter your teeth go depends on the cause of the discolouration and your natural tooth colour. No specific shade change can be promised.
It is not permanent
Teeth pick up stain again over time. How quickly depends on diet, smoking and oral hygiene; top-ups are often needed to maintain the result.
Restorations do not whiten
Crowns, veneers, bridges and fillings keep their colour, and may look darker beside whitened teeth. Replacing them afterwards is sometimes necessary.
Not suitable for everyone
Whitening is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, or where there is untreated decay, gum disease or exposed root surfaces.
Supervision matters
In Australia, higher-strength whitening products may only be used by or under the direction of a registered dental practitioner. Ill-fitting kits from other sources can burn the gums.

What it costs

Fees differ between in-chair treatment and a take-home kit, and any examination or clean needed beforehand is quoted separately.

You are given the fee in writing with item numbers before you commit, so you can check any rebate with your health fund first.

Enquire Now

Whitening before other treatment

If veneers, crowns or implant restorations are planned for your front teeth, whitening usually goes first so the new work can be matched to the final shade. Mention it when you book.

Frequently asked questions

How much whiter will my teeth get?−
That varies from person to person and depends on the cause of the discolouration, your natural tooth colour and how your teeth respond. Your dentist records your starting shade and gives you a realistic expectation before treatment — a specific result cannot be promised.
How long does the result last?+
Anywhere from several months to a couple of years, depending on diet, smoking and oral hygiene. Coffee, tea, red wine and curries will re-stain teeth. Many patients use a take-home kit occasionally to maintain the shade.
Is whitening safe for enamel?+
Whitening carried out by, or under the direction of, a registered dentist after an examination is a well-established treatment. Sensitivity and gum irritation are the usual side effects. Risks increase with unsupervised use of high-strength products or poorly fitting trays.
Can I whiten if I have crowns, veneers or fillings?+
You can whiten the natural teeth, but restorations will not change colour and may end up looking darker. Where restorations sit on front teeth, we plan the sequence with you — sometimes replacing them after whitening is the only way to match.
What about whitening toothpastes and over-the-counter kits?+
Whitening toothpastes work mainly by removing surface stain, so the effect is limited. Over-the-counter kits use lower concentrations and generic trays; poorly fitting trays let gel contact the gums. An examination first also rules out decay, which no whitening product treats.
